The Arkavathy river is an important part of Bangalore's history. It shows how fast water can deplete. It is physical proof that there can be no water in a lake after a matter of a couple of years. This fast depletion is what made this river famous.
This river is extremely important as, for the longest time, it was the source of drinking water for people living all around Bangalore, before they started getting their water supply directly from the river Kaveri. Kaveri became the main water source after the depletion of water in the Arkavathy. The Arkavathy river was also a major source of water for all farmers growing crops in the surrounding areas near the river. Since the depletion of water, farmers have either moved their plantations elsewhere or got the water supply to the farm. Even then, farmers were affected, because their plants may not have got fresh water, because there is a lot of garbage in and around the lake, toxins from that garbage could have leaked into the water, making it polluted. Farmers who used this water, would not have a fresh garden, but an infected one.
Another reason this river is important is the fact that it is a source of drinking water for different animals. Now, since the river has nearly dried up, the lake bed in Hesaraghatta is used as a grazing ground for cows, goats, buffaloes, dogs, and other animals. Since there is a small water body there, animals can drink out of it, but no one knows if this lake water is fresh or not. This could lead to various animals developing diseases. Preserving and taking care of this water body, can help in preventing this from happening.
Even though the Arkavathy river has very little water, there is a lot of fish in it. So, not preserving the water body, can lead to the loss of their habitat, and other habitats also, which rely on this water.
Overall, with constant neglect by the people of caring for this river, it had dried up. This is the perfect example to make people realize the changes that need to be made.
