All the things that got affected due to the drying up of river Arkavathy

The major sector that was impacted due to the drying of river Arkavathy was the ‘Farming’. In the 1900s, when the river had a tremendous flow of water, the farmers had shifted from grain crops to commercial farming with horticultural crops, fruits and vegetables. To grow these crops, the farmers need a lot of water. But as years went by, there came a shortage of water. The water wasn’t sufficient for the city or for farming. This led the farmers to dig more and deeper bore wells or to eventually give up farming and find a new source of income for their family.

Rapid urbanization has given rise to many unplanned developments. Industries are set-up with no proper waste management. The industries dump the solid waste in the landfill and chemical waste is released into a channel. The chemical waste seeps through, into the ground or flows into the river, ultimately polluting the water. This water is used for drinking, farming, fishing, etc. When the water is consumed through so many different ways, proper precautions and system is utmost necessary. But due to lack of proper management, the toxic chemicals have caused health problems and crop problems. A strange pattern of life-threatening diseases that are affecting the people. A lot of people living around the water body are suffering from gastro-intestinal and skin disorders as all water sources (well, bore well and tank) have been heavily polluted.
